Oh My Musical Goodness is a musical love story.
Across a lifetime lived in the musical world we realised that access to making music had become limited to two main factors – you either had to be able to read music and ‘learn’ an instrument, or you had to be content to shake a maraca, click a castanet or tap a tambourine. What’s more, you only had access to ‘proper’ instruments (the ones requiring lessons), or to a selection of bright, childlike plastic instruments or cheap, ‘coconut shell and seeds’ style percussion. The era of hand-crafted, intricately carved, instinctively played instruments of emotional, energetic and spiritual significance, in the Western World, was non existent! So? We vowed to reignite the musical light.
The instruments you’ll find at Oh My Musical Goodness can be played by anyone, regardless of musical background or ability They are utterly beautiful to hear, incredible to touch and play, and they create rhythm and melody in a way that realign, reenergise and delight. This is not a store for shakers, clickers and clackers. The instruments held in this space allow meaningful and mindful music to be created, for anyone who touches the instrument, whether they be baby or elder. OMMG is our creative offering to the world.
Our Team Allison Davies, BMusBTchMasMusThy, is a Neurologic Music Therapist in private practice in regional Tasmania, Australia. She lives in the bush, by the beach with her husband, two children and their puss Twistie. Alli’s first musical love was Fats Domino, her first ever words, at age one, came from a Fats cassette her Dad made her, and her life’s trajectory was basically set in stone from that moment on. Alli studied ethno-musicology as part of her bachelor of music and is thrilled to be now curating a collection of traditional, cross-cultural and improvisational instruments.
Leighton Burr, husband to Alli, is the one who keeps their family on track. An incredible dad and husband who never really complains (or even rolls his eyes) when Alli comes home with a new idea that she simply MUST work on immediately! He is the grounding force in OMMG, the keeper of the Status Quo and the voice of reason when it is needed.
Our Values The ethical integrity of OMMG is of utmost importance to us. We aim to bring you instruments that are handcrafted by artisans using traditional methods. Instruments that won’t lose their novelty and will last forever. Instruments with cultural significance. However our highest value and motivation is that our instruments are inclusive and accessible by people of all abilities; regardless of age, musical background or their physical, mental or emotional development. As a music therapist, Alli is determined to bridge the gap between those who ‘can’ play music and those who ‘can’t’, re-introducing an equal playing field where anyone with the desire to do so can create meaningful music.
Our Community The concept of OMMG was born following the birth of our children – Maple and Chester. For 5 years now, OMMG has been creating community, drawing together families who (following Maple’s lead) have taught their children to chant or (following Alli’s lead) have introduced music strategies in their lives to manage sensory overload, anxiety and emotional regulation. The photos and videos of your children playing their instruments and making music brings joy to our days. Please keep them coming using #OhMyMusicalGoodness to share the love.
